Does the Earth hurt?

Metal mouth of a long claw stretched out
and then unearths old cement pieces,
like whole bits of brittle candy.
Thick chunks thunk into gray trucks
which wait in line to be delivered
to the grave of dead stones.
The grounded down sound of
mighty engines shifting gears
and voices of the foreman
ordering laborers to
keep at it until the job is done
and the dirt can finally
be smoothed over
with thick hot
black pitch.
