Flaggers, are people too

Rumbling past the monster Tonka trucks
Dust stirs up St. Jay’s past and
Tired years of stone pounded down
By men who’ve long been gone.
The flaggers stand on duty
As though they are second in command of
The workers who man the heavy equipment
Tearing up a large stretch of historic Main Street.
Drivers honk rudely in a rush to get somewhere else,
Annoyed by the bumps and abrupt
Stops from those assigned to traffic control.
Donning bright yellow cautionary gear
Walkie-talkie in hand they stand tall
Proudly holding road signs to keep
Pedestrians and drivers safe.
